Amboseli National Park
Amboseli is Kenya's second most popular park and its defining feature
is its spectacular back-drop of Mount Kilimanjaro, which overlooks
the southern end of the park. Amboseli is actually quite a
small park and lacks the intensity of wildlife found in the Maasai
Mara although its vegetation provides reasonable cover for bigger
game species and, as such, there is a good chance of seeing some
of the larger predators.
Enkongo Narok and Olokenya
Whilst the park does not have any rhino, it is home to strong populations
of buffalo, cheetah, lion, hyena, zebra, Maasai giraffe, wildebeest,
jackal, warthog and baboon. The largest elephant populations
can be found beside the permanent swamps of Enkongo Narok and
Olokenya in the centre and east of the park.
Whilst Amboseli's popularity has made it a very busy park and consequently
a potentially slightly disappointing experience, there are a
number of private sanctuaries outside the park boundaries, but
still fairly nearby, that all have abundant game and the same fantastic
views of Mount Kilimanjaro yet with the peace and quiet of a
private and more exclusive set-up.
